Recognition of Prior Learning and 'Challenge Assessments'

Sometimes an individual may not have all of the skills and expertise required to form a Qualification. In this event, under the AQF, the student would be entitled to a Statement of Attainment. However, it is possible to provide the student with 'Challenge Assessments'.. With traditional RPL, the onus is on the student to demonstrate valid, sufficient, current and authentic evidence. Sometimes they simply cannot, and an assessor may ask them to perform a challenge assessment or gain new skills and come back to fill "the gap".

With RPL, the student is not usually automatically entitled to challenge assessments, however the discretion is usually left with the assessor. The assessor has to follow the principles of assessment - and be flexible. Sometimes there is too much of a gap, and a recommendation is made for the student to study that unit. Sometimes there may be only a small part of a unit that cannot be validated or demonstrated, and that is where short courses come in.

By studying a short course, you can gain new knowledge without the pressure or concern that you have to pass, or sit an exam. They are designed to be fun, flexible and teach you important skills that are not accredited under the AQF but valuable skills to assist in demonstrating competency.
